About the department and roles

​​AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. 

​The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO’s end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market.

We're building the next chapter of our Technical Solutions function and are seeking exceptional engineering and technical leadership talent to join us. With opportunities available at Team Lead, Principal Engineer and Specialist Engineer level, you'll play a key role in shaping regulatory reform, improving connection outcomes and supporting the secure and reliable transformation of the power system.

The positions can be worked out of office locations in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Team Lead, Technical Solutions

Lead a team delivering regulatory reform, technical guidance and industry initiatives that support the efficient integration of new generation, storage and load into the National Electricity Market. Working with regulators, governments, network service providers and market participants, you'll influence industry outcomes while developing a high performing team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of regulatory reforms, technical guidelines and industry frameworks.
  • Build strong relationships across industry, government and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Drive improvements to generator connection processes and technical standards.
  • Manage team capability, resourcing and delivery priorities.
  • Mentor and develop team members while fostering a collaborative team culture.
  • Provide strategic advice on connection, performance standards and system strength matters.

What you will bring to the role

  • Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market and National Electricity Rules.
  • Experience leading teams, programs or complex technical initiatives.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and drive industry outcomes.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

Principal Engineer / Specialist Engineer, Technical Solutions

Provide technical leadership on critical power system challenges that support the security, reliability and future evolution of the National Electricity Market. You'll lead technical studies, solve complex generator connection issues and work closely with industry stakeholders to support the energy transition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead projects addressing emerging power system and energy market challenges.
  • Conduct power system studies and provide technical advice on complex issues.
  • Support and troubleshoot generator connection projects.
  • Engage with network service providers, developers, OEMs and industry stakeholders.
  • Produce technical reports, recommendations and presentations.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to technical capability across the team.

What You'll Bring

  • Experience in power systems engineering and analysis.
  • Strong understanding of the National Electricity Market and generator connections.
  • Experience using PSS®E and/or PSCAD.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience leading technical projects and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a power systems focus.
