The Opportunity

We're looking for a Principal Engineer, AI to help shape how AI is built, scaled and embedded across Medibank.

Working within Digital Platforms & Engineering and closely connected to our Enterprise AI Hub, you'll play a critical role translating enterprise AI strategy into practical engineering outcomes. Acting as the bridge between strategic AI initiatives and software delivery teams, you'll help ensure our AI capabilities are scalable, secure, cost-effective and ready for production.

This is a technical leadership role for someone who combines deep platform and software engineering expertise with a passion for modern AI technologies. You'll guide engineering teams, shape architecture decisions, establish engineering standards and build the platform capabilities that enable AI adoption across the organisation. You'll help ensure Medibank's engineering foundations are scalable, secure and ready to support both current and emerging AI use cases.

You'll be most successful if you're someone who enjoys solving complex problems, influencing without authority and bringing people together to deliver meaningful outcomes.

What You'll Be Doing

• Shaping the technical vision for how AI capabilities are embedded into Medibank's platforms, products and services.

• Driving platform engineering practices that improve developer experience, operational excellence and the consistent delivery of AI-enabled solutions.

• Translating enterprise AI strategy into actionable engineering roadmaps and scalable technical solutions.
• Providing technical leadership and architectural guidance across AI-enabled software development initiatives.
• Defining and evolving engineering standards, patterns and frameworks that enable teams to build AI solutions consistently and efficiently.
• Embedding modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automation and secure-by-design delivery approaches.
• Partnering with engineering, architecture, security, risk and delivery teams to ensure AI solutions are scalable, secure and well governed.
• Driving adoption of AI engineering practices through coaching, enablement and knowledge sharing across squads.
• Advising on cloud architecture, model integration, performance optimisation and cost-efficient AI delivery.
• Influencing strategic technology decisions across multiple domains while balancing innovation, risk and long-term sustainability.
• Mentoring engineers and technical leaders, helping grow AI engineering capability across Medibank.

About You

You're a senior engineering leader with a strong background in platform engineering, software engineering and technical architecture, with a track record of delivering complex technology outcomes in large-scale environments. You've helped build and evolve enterprise platforms that enable teams to deliver securely, reliably and at scale.

You know how to bridge strategy and execution, bringing clarity to ambiguity and helping teams turn emerging technologies into practical business capability.

You'll bring:

• Extensive experience in software engineering, engineering leadership or technical architecture roles.
• Hands-on experience building and delivering customer-facing digital products and platforms.
• Practical experience integrating AI technologies, models and APIs into production software environments.
• Strong knowledge of modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, cloud-native development and DevOps.
• Experience working with cloud platforms and AI services, particularly AWS and related technologies.
• Strong understanding of microservices, APIs and modern application architectures.
• The ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams and stakeholder groups.
• Experience balancing innovation, risk, performance and cost considerations when delivering technology solutions.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
