Civmec is expanding its Commercial team to support an exciting pipeline of upcoming projects. We are seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to initially lead the commercial function on a recently secured project, driving commercial success through strong team leadership, proactive client engagement and effective project delivery in a fast-paced environment.
You will be a key member of the project management team, with the opportunity to contribute to a commercial function establishing itself as industry leading in strength, consistency and culture. You will play a central role in driving commercial and project outcomes while managing key relationships with project stakeholders and taking a proactive, pragmatic approach to risk, contractual obligations and the relationships between Civmec, its clients and suppliers. This role offers flexibility for both FIFO and Henderson-based arrangements.
The Role
Provide strong commercial leadership across all project commercial and contractual functions, including:
- Lead head contract administration and compliance, including the timely identification, preparation and submission of notices, claims, contractual correspondence and entitlement submissions.
- Drive the commercial strategy, preparation, negotiation and closeout of variations, extensions of time and remeasurement claims, ensuring entitlements are protected and project outcomes are maximised.
- Manage supplier and subcontractor procurement, engagement and commercial administration, ensuring appropriate risk allocation, contract formation, performance management and closeout discipline.
- Provide practical contractual and commercial guidance to the project team, supporting informed decision-making, early risk identification and disciplined compliance with head contract and subcontract obligations.
- Manage cashflow, progress claims, quantity remeasurement processes, client payment cycles and associated project reporting to support predictable commercial performance.
- Oversee project cost control and commercial reporting, including monthly forecasts, cost-to-complete analysis, cashflow forecasting, supplier liabilities and commercial risk registers.
- Establish and maintain robust systems, registers and governance processes to ensure variations, contract adjustments, risks, opportunities and commercial actions are identified, tracked and recovered throughout the project lifecycle.
- Undertake and oversee complex commercial, contractual and strategic matters requiring sound judgement, strong written advocacy and senior-level engagement with clients, subcontractors and internal stakeholders
- Lead, mentor and develop the project commercial team, fostering accountability, collaboration, commercial discipline and a high-performance culture across the project.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring a strong combination of commercial leadership, major project delivery experience and practical contractual capability, including:
- A tertiary qualification in law, quantity surveying, engineering, construction management or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in a senior commercial leadership role on major construction, resources, infrastructure or heavy engineering projects.
- At least 10 years’ experience in the delivery of major projects, including commercial leadership responsibility on mega-projects exceeding AUD 200 million.
- Proven experience leading, developing and managing commercial teams of more than five people, with the ability to set clear standards, build capability and create a disciplined, accountable team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear commercial positions, influence stakeholders and support effective project decision-making.
