Infectious Diseases - Clinical Research Fellow
- Full-time, fixed-term role from Feb 2027 to Feb 2028 - 80 hours per fortnight.

- Up to $110,879.00 (1SR6) - $125,346.00 (1SR11) per annum (excluding employer superannuation contributions and 5 weeks' paid annual leave)

The National Centre for Infections in Cancer (NCIC) is a dedicated infectious diseases service and research centre focused on managing infections in immunocompromised patients. Working within a world-leading cancer centre, the team conducts innovative clinical research that improves outcomes for people affected by cancer and serious infections.
About the role
As the Infectious Diseases - Clinical Research Fellow, you will provide high-quality clinical oversight and care for patients enrolled in infection-related clinical trials while contributing to research, education and service development within the Infectious Diseases Unit. You will play a key role in protocol development, study conduct, patient recruitment, data collection and manuscript preparation.
A regular day will see you:
- Coordinating clinical trial activities.
- Supporting protocol development, sponsorship applications, ethics submissions and governance processes.
- Collecting and managing research data, determining eligibility, screening, consenting, enrolment, co-ordinating and conducting study visits, and capturing adverse events.
- Ensuring compliance with GCP requirements.
- Participating in departmental research projects an Infectious diseases unit education and team meetings.
About you
You are a collaborative and patient-centred clinician with a strong interest in infectious diseases and clinical research. You enjoy working within multidisciplinary teams and are committed to advancing evidence-based care through research and continuous learning.
You'll bring with you:
- Medical qualifications registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Fellowship or advanced trainee status with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent overseas specialist training.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
- A patient-centred approach to care and excellent communication skills.
Desirable:
- At least one year of advanced training in Infectious Diseases.
- Familiarity with epidemiology, statistics and REDCap databases.
- Experience preparing sponsorship, ethics and governance applications.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical clinical trial governance and grant administration processes.

Position Summary

The National Centre for Infections in Cancer (NCIC) Clinical Research Fellow will provide high quality oversight and care for patients enrolled in infection clinical trials, assist in developing studies and study conduct including protocol development, sponsorship and ethics applications, determining eligibility, screening, consenting, enrolment, co-ordinating and conducting study visits, and capturing adverse events. The fellow will perform data collection, manuscript writing and participate in Infectious diseases unit education and team meetings and will participate in education and research in the field of infectious diseases.

External Infection and immunity Departments within the precinct eg VIDS, Doherty, MDU, RMH etc, and research partners nationally (eg Austin, Westmead, University of Queensland CRE RESPOND, the National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship) and internationally (eg Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre)
Skills
Essentail Requirements
- Medical Qualifications registrable by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- Fellow or advanced trainee of Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent overseas trained physician
- Experience in a multidisciplinary team setting
- Works with a patient centred approach to care
Desirable Requirements
- At least 1 year of advanced training in infectious diseases
- Familiarity with epidemiology, statistics and RedCAP databases or working towards completing relevant courses
- Experience with submitting sponsorship, ethics and governance applications in a research setting
- Familiarity with the pharma clinical trial governance environment
- Familiarity with grant administration in the academic environment
Key Accountabilities
1. Research
- Effectively manages all delegated clinical trial activities
- Completes all tasks and documentation according to the centre’s policies/procedures and GCP requirements
- Liaises and communicates with the multidisciplinary treating team
- Contributes to team meetings and educational activities
- Participates in departmental research projects and audits
- Available to attend clinical trials team meetings, site initiation visits, investigator meetings and maintain good relationships with external trial co-ordinators and funders.
2. Departmental
- Effective working relationships with all disciplines involved in patient care.
- Readiness to take direction and willingness to learn from supervisor, other members of the team and other colleagues.
- Work as part of clinical trials team within a busy Health Services research and consulting unit
3. Professional Development
- Encouraged to lead a research project
- May pursue a higher degree (eg a PhD)
- Demonstrates a commitment to continuing professional development and participates in performance review/appraisal
- Maintain mandatory training requirements as defined by hospital and research policy
