Summary:

The Head of Cancer Services and Medical Oncologist is a pivotal clinical leadership role within a dynamic regional health network in South Australia, responsible for shaping and delivering high-quality, patient-centred cancer care across a diverse and expanding service area. This role combines strategic oversight of cancer services with direct specialist clinical practice, driving innovation, workforce development, and continuous improvement in oncology care. The successful candidate will lead the design and implementation of sustainable cancer care models, foster multidisciplinary collaboration, and champion evidence-based practice, quality governance, and clinical excellence. With a strong commitment to education, research, and community engagement, the individual will play a key role in advancing cancer care delivery in a regional setting while contributing to a culture of learning, inclusivity, and professional growth.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic development, implementation, and evaluation of cancer services across the local health network.
  • Provide expert clinical oncology services, including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management of cancer patients.
  • Champion patient-centred care through the integration of clinical excellence, compassionate practice, and service innovation.
  • Drive quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance, and compliance with national standards and best practice guidelines.
  • Mentor and supervise junior medical staff, trainees, and allied health professionals in oncology care delivery.
  • Foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated, holistic cancer care pathways.
  • Promote and participate in clinical research, education, and professional development activities.
  • Contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, and retention strategies within the cancer services team.
  • Represent the service in regional, state, and national forums to advocate for sustainable cancer care models.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or equivalent), with Specialist Registration in Medical Oncology with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Proven experience in clinical leadership within cancer services, including service development and operational management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork, quality improvement, and patient safety.
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring, and supervising medical trainees and allied health professionals.
  • Active involvement in clinical research, publications, or service innovation initiatives.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a regional healthcare environment with a focus on sustainability, self-sufficiency, and community impact.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to organisational goals.
