About the Business

Daffy Contracting Pty Ltd is a diesel mechanical business based in Sunshine West, in Melbourne’s west, that has repaired and serviced trucks and heavy machinery since 2016. Operated under the direct leadership of its Director, the business works with the owners and operators of commercial vehicles and plant who depend on reliable equipment to keep their own businesses moving, providing fault diagnosis, mechanical and electrical repairs, scheduled maintenance and component overhauls across a wide range of heavy diesel vehicles and machinery. The workshop is a small, hands-on team supported by trusted subcontractors, where tradespeople take ownership of their jobs from first inspection to final test, and where thorough workmanship, straight answers for customers and a safe, well-run workshop are the standards every job is measured against.

About the Position

This is a new, full-time Diesel Motor Mechanic position based at the Sunshine West workshop and reporting directly to the Director. In a team of this size the mechanic carries each job from end to end, diagnosing faults in trucks and heavy machinery, carrying out repairs and scheduled servicing, and testing the vehicle or machine before it is returned to the customer. Every hour a truck or an excavator is off the road costs its operator money, so the role calls for accurate first-time diagnosis, dependable workmanship and the ability to keep several jobs moving while coordinating with other workshop staff and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Detect and diagnose mechanical and electrical faults in the engines, drivelines and associated systems of trucks and heavy machinery.
  • Use computerised diagnostic equipment and test procedures to identify faults, confirm the condition of parts and verify repairs.
  • Dismantle and remove engine assemblies, transmissions, steering mechanisms and other components, and inspect parts for wear, damage and defects.
  • Repair or replace worn and defective parts and reassemble mechanical components, working to manufacturers’ service manuals and specifications.
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrication, engine tune-ups and inspections, so that vehicles and machines run smoothly and comply with pollution regulations.
  • Reassemble engines and components after repair.
  • Test and adjust repaired parts and systems to confirm proper performance before a vehicle or machine is returned to service.
  • Coordinate work with other workshop staff and subcontractors on shared jobs and guide less experienced team members where required.
  • Keep clear and accurate records of the faults found, work performed and parts used on each job.

Requirements

  • Australian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply.
  • Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology and Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis, or equivalent qualifications.
  • At least one to two years’ experience servicing and repairing diesel-powered trucks or heavy machinery.
  • Strong diagnostic skills across engines, transmissions, steering, driveline and electrical systems, with proficiency in computerised diagnostic tools and test equipment; the ability to read and apply service manuals, wiring diagrams and manufacturers’ specifications; a working knowledge of emissions and pollution requirements and workshop safety practices; and the discipline to keep accurate service records.
  • Clear communication with customers and the Director about faults, repair options and timeframes; the ability to work independently and as part of a small team, including coordinating with subcontractors; a reliable, safety-focused and methodical approach to problem solving; and availability to work full-time hours.
