Our client is a federal government agency dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the safety, wellbeing, and quality of life of Australian residents.

The Opportunity

This is a newly created APS6 role within a high performing corporate team. Working in the Financial Framework and Business Improvement function, you will contribute to strengthening financial governance, improving internal controls and enhancing assurance activities across the agency. Acting EL1 opportunities will be available for high performers, and the organisation offers flexible working arrangements to better support staff and promote work life balance.

It’s a vacant position. For people from private sector, it’s a non-ongoing 12 months contract with opportunity to become permanent employee. For existing APS employee, this can be an s26 permanent transfer role.

The successful candidate can be based in either Canberra or Sydney.

The Role

In this position, you will:

• Conduct internal assurance and review activities across financial processes and information
• Analyse financial and non-financial data to identify risks, gaps and opportunities for improvement
• Provide guidance to stakeholders on compliance requirements and internal control expectations
• Contribute to the development and refinement of policies, procedures and training materials
• Support the design and implementation of solutions that strengthen financial governance and operational effectiveness
• Engage with internal stakeholders to influence sound financial practices

The Ideal Person

Our ideal candidate will communicate clearly, build constructive relationships with stakeholders and bring experience in internal audit, assurance or external audit. Qualifications in accounting or finance will be highly regarded. An understanding of accounting principles and frameworks within the federal government context will also be beneficial.

You are likely to come from one of the following backgrounds:

• External audit experience within the federal government, Big 4 or other audit firms
• Internal audit or assurance experience within the APS or a Commonwealth entity

Salary / Rate

• $95k – $110k + 15.4% Super
