Blood Borne Virus / Sexually Transmitted Infections RN

Role Overview

Provide sexual and blood-borne virus (BBV) testing, treatment, education and prevention services in clinical and community settings.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Assess clients and provide testing for BBVs (HIV, hepatitis B & C) and STIs.

• Collect specimens (blood, swabs) and manage results and follow-up.

• Provide treatment, health advice, counselling and referrals within scope of practice.

• Support prevention activities such as vaccinations and harm-reduction education.

Community & Public Health

• Deliver health education on safer sex, transmission, testing and prevention.

• Work with doctors, allied health and community workers.

• Assist with contact tracing and public health follow-up.

Administration & Quality

• Maintain accurate clinical records and reports.

• Contribute to service improvement, audits, education and training.

Skills & Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (AHPRA) – essential.

• Experience in sexual health, community or public health nursing preferred.

• Strong skills in assessment, specimen collection, counselling and education.

• Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity and non-judgmental approach.

• Postgraduate training in sexual/reproductive health or public health is desirable.
