FOOD TECHNOLOGIST
Continental Kosher Butchers Pty Ltd
Moorabbin, Melbourne VIC
Full-time, 38 hours per week
$80,000 to $85,000 per annum plus superannuation
ABOUT CONTINENTAL KOSHER BUTCHERS
Continental Kosher Butchers is an established Melbourne food manufacturing business, operating since 1945. Our Moorabbin production facility manufactures meat and smallgoods products within a highly regulated environment where food safety, product quality and technical compliance are central to everything we do.
We are seeking an experienced Food Technologist to join our onsite team and contribute to the continued development, manufacture and improvement of safe, high-quality food products.
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager, the Food Technologist will provide professional food technology expertise across product and process improvement, food safety, quality assurance, technical compliance and production support.
This is an experienced professional role rather than a graduate position. It will suit someone with strong food science knowledge who can work independently on technical matters, collaborate closely with production and QA teams, and translate sound science into practical manufacturing outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Food Technologist will:
• contribute to the development and improvement of existing and new meat and smallgoods products, including trials, processing methods, formulations, packaging and specifications;
• develop, maintain and improve food safety and quality systems, including HACCP, hazard analysis, CCPs, verification, validation, traceability and recall preparedness;
• assess raw materials, ingredients, in-process products and finished products against food safety, quality and specification requirements;
• investigate product and process non-conformances, complaints and quality issues using root cause analysis, corrective action and effectiveness review;
• support regulatory, certification and customer food-safety audits, including preparation, technical support and corrective-action follow-up;
• maintain product specifications, technical documentation, process information and food-safety records, including technical input into packaging, labelling and compliance;
• use data, digital systems and appropriate new technologies to improve food safety, hygiene, verification, traceability, quality systems and manufacturing performance; and
• provide technical guidance and training to production employees while working closely with the Quality Assurance Manager and operations team.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants must have:
• a Bachelor degree in Food Technology, Food Science or a closely related relevant discipline;
• a minimum of five years' relevant post-qualification professional experience in food manufacturing, food technology, quality assurance and/or food safety;
• strong practical knowledge of HACCP and food safety management systems;
• demonstrated experience with food quality systems, technical documentation, verification, audits and regulatory compliance;
• experience with non-conformance investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action, traceability and recall systems;
• strong analytical, problem-solving and written communication skills;
• high digital literacy and confidence working with data, digital quality systems and technology; and
• the ability to work independently on professional technical matters while collaborating effectively with production, quality and management teams.
Experience in meat, smallgoods, ready-to-eat foods or another highly regulated food manufacturing environment will be highly regarded. Experience with internal auditing, supplier quality, product and process development, data logging, sensory evaluation or digital food-safety systems will also be valued.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are particularly interested in someone who is curious, technically capable and comfortable improving the way things are done. The successful candidate will combine a strong grounding in food science with a willingness to explore and adopt technology where it can strengthen food safety, hygiene, product quality, verification and the efficiency of our technical systems.
