Our store stocks fresh produce, spices, pulses, rice and flours, snacks, frozen goods, beverages, confectionery and everyday grocery essentials sourced from trusted domestic and international suppliers.
As part of our continued growth, we are seeking an experienced and commercially focused Retail Buyer to manage product sourcing, supplier relationships, purchasing and inventory planning across our grocery range. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping our product offering, identifying emerging consumer trends and ensuring the right products are in stock at the right price and at the right time.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and analyse grocery, food and multicultural retail market trends, consumer preferences and competitor activity to determine product requirements.
- Select and source grocery products, including fresh produce, spices, pulses, rice, flours, snacks, frozen foods, dairy, beverages, confectionery and general grocery items.
- Identify new product opportunities based on customer demand, seasonal trends, festivals (including Diwali, Eid, Holi, Christmas and New Year) and sales performance.
- Develop product ranges that align with the store's brand positioning, target customer base and commercial objectives.
- Negotiate with domestic and international suppliers, wholesalers and importers regarding pricing, minimum order quantities, payment terms, delivery schedules and supply agreements.
- Assess product quality, freshness, packaging, shelf life and labelling before approving products for sale.
- Ensure grocery products comply with relevant Australian food safety standards, labelling requirements, import regulations and company quality standards.
- Monitor stock levels, replenishment requirements, lead times and inventory turnover to maintain appropriate stock availability while minimising wastage of perishable and slow-moving stock.
- Review sales reports, customer purchasing behaviour, profit margins and product performance to support informed buying decisions.
- Prepare seasonal buying plans and purchasing budgets for key trading periods including Diwali, Eid, Christmas, New Year and other festival and promotional periods.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with grocery wholesalers, importers, manufacturers and local suppliers.
- Prepare purchase orders and maintain accurate procurement, supplier, pricing and inventory records.
- Coordinate with logistics providers and suppliers to monitor shipments and resolve delivery delays, damaged goods, shortages or incorrect orders.
- Work closely with store and marketing staff to plan promotions, in-store specials and new product launches.
- Monitor competitor pricing and recommend suitable retail prices, discounts and profit margins.
- Assist with maintaining a well-stocked, diverse and regularly refreshed grocery range that meets customer demand.
Skills and Qualifications
- Proven experience in retail buying, procurement, merchandise planning or product sourcing; grocery, food or FMCG experience highly regarded.
- Good knowledge of grocery categories, South Asian and multicultural food products, and current consumer trends.
- Strong commercial awareness and the ability to select products that meet customer demand while achieving suitable profit margins.
- Strong negotiation, supplier-management and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to analyse sales data, inventory reports and product performance.
- Understanding of retail operations, promotions and seasonal sales cycles.
- Experience sourcing products from Australian and international (including Indian/South Asian) suppliers is highly desirable.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly when managing purchasing records and inventory.
- Ability to manage multiple product categories, suppliers and purchasing deadlines simultaneously.
- Competency in Microsoft Excel and inventory-management systems.
- Relevant qualifications in business, retail management, procurement or a related field are desirable.
