Role Description/Criteria
We're excited to introduce Auslan as part of our specialist learning program in 2027 and we're looking for someone passionate about the language and Deaf culture to help us make it something special.
Initial fixed-term appointment, subject to applicable employment requirements, with potential for ongoing employment.
You don't necessarily need to be a qualified teacher to apply. We're interested in hearing from both VIT-registered teachers with Auslan proficiency and fluent Auslan users who could work collaboratively with a registered teacher to deliver the program.
At St Kevin's, we believe teaching is an act of love. We are a Christ-centred Catholic school where children, families and staff are known, welcomed and supported to thrive. Our community is proudly multicultural, grounded in love, service and respect.
Why St Kevin's?
- A chance to create something meaningful: Help establish an engaging, inclusive Auslan program that can grow with our school.
- Language and culture together: Share not only Auslan but also an appreciation of Deaf culture, identity and community.
- Evidence with heart: We value purposeful, effective teaching while recognising that relationships, creativity and joy are central to learning.
- Belonging: Join a warm, diverse community where differences are celebrated and every person has something valuable to contribute.
- An opportunity to grow: We're looking to establish a successful, sustainable program, with the possibility of ongoing employment as it develops.
You
- Are fluent or highly proficient in Auslan and passionate about sharing it with children.
- Have a strong understanding of and respect for Deaf culture and community.
- Can make language learning engaging, accessible and enjoyable for primary-aged students.
- Are enthusiastic about helping design and establish a new learning program.
- Enjoy working collaboratively and building positive relationships.
- Support the values and Catholic ethos of St Kevin's.
Qualifications and requirements
We welcome applications from:
- Qualified teachers who hold current Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration and have demonstrated proficiency in Auslan.
- Fluent Auslan users who are not registered teachers, including Deaf community members, who are interested in working alongside a VIT-registered teacher to support the delivery of our Auslan program.
The responsibilities and employment classification will be determined according to the successful applicant's qualifications, registration and experience.
All applicants must demonstrate a commitment to child safety and wellbeing and meet the relevant employment screening requirements.
We strongly encourage Deaf and hard of hearing Auslan users to apply.
Please submit a cover letter outlining your Auslan experience, your interest in working with primary-aged children and what you could bring to the development of our new program, together with your résumé and relevant qualifications.
St Kevin's Primary School is committed to the safety, wellbeing and protection of all children.
We reserve the right to interview and appoint a successful applicant before the application closing date.
