Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced Kong Developer / API Gateway Engineer to design, develop and implement secure, scalable and highly available API Gateway solutions. The role will focus on Kong Enterprise engineering, API security, authentication and authorization, custom plugin development, cloud-native deployment and automation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, configure and maintain Kong Enterprise API Gateway solutions within cloud-native environments.
• Engineer and support Kong API Gateway in hybrid deployment models, including deployments on AWS EKS/Kubernetes.
• Design and implement secure authentication and authorization patterns for enterprise APIs.
• Integrate Kong with identity and security technologies including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, mTLS, Microsoft Entra ID and Ping Identity.
• Develop and deploy custom Kong plugins, including functionality supporting mTLS termination, API security and Layer 7 observability.
• Implement API traffic management capabilities including rate limiting, scalability and resilient gateway configurations.
• Develop infrastructure automation and Kong platform configurations using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices.
• Develop supporting automation and integration components using Lua, Python, Bash, Java and JavaScript.
• Integrate API Gateway capabilities with cloud and container platforms including AWS, EKS and Kubernetes.
• Implement secure service-to-service communication and certificate-based authentication.
• Support fine-grafined authorization and policy-based access controls, including technologies such as OPA/OPAL.
• Build and maintain reliable, production-grade gateway solutions with a strong focus on availability, scalability, security and observability.
• Troubleshoot Kong/API Gateway issues across development, testing and production environments.
• Participate in incident investigation, root-cause analysis and continuous improvement of API platform reliability.
• Work closely with application, cloud, security, IAM and DevOps teams to integrate APIs securely across enterprise platforms.
